My Favorite Movies

My favorite movies don't all fall into the gothic/dark/horror genre, sorry to disappoint you. Usually they are on my fave list because of the mood they set, the place they take my mind to while I am there.

Blade Runner: Harrison Ford, yum. As a bonus, it stars the luscious Darryl Hannah, Sean Young, and Rutger Hauer.

Fifth Element: Eye candy and great music.

Death and the Maiden: Starring Sigourney Weaver and Ben Kingsley. I like to watch this while I am at my family's lake house on vacation. The mood it sets for me, if I turn out all the lights while I am watching it, and throw open the doors to the sound of the wind and the lake, is of a woman alone in a cabin in the wilderness, waiting...

Edward Scissorhands: I'm SO glad I saw this on the big screen when I had the chance. The delicious Johnny Depp, freaky imagery, a spooky castle, and the wonderful Diane Wiest. I can watch this over and over and not get bored.

Nightmare Before Christmas: Well duh, of course.. Tim Burton's masterpiece of animation. It sets a dark, yet happy mood. I even went as Sally for one Halloween.

Santa Sangre: Good luck finding this; it is so bizarre that a lot of rental places don't carry it. A small boy's mother spends all her time at a temple/shrine dedicated to a woman who was raped and had both her arms cut off. The boy's family works in a circus. The boy grows up and becomes insane because he watched his mother's arms get cut off, by her boyfriend. The mother helps her son escape from a mental hospital, and he becomes her "arms". She requires most of his attention and energy, but he manages to escape and fall in love with a girl from the circus. A very strange film.

Empire of the Sun: A cute little Christian Bale, doing a fantastic performance, and John Malkovich. This recently came out on DVD finally.

Reservoir Dogs: Guns, a bunch of cool dudes, and lots of blood and death. How can I Not like it?

The Piano: Holly Hunter won an Oscar for her performance of a mute woman in this film. Mostly I like it for the cinematography (and seeing Harvey Kietel naked is a plus for me, though that will nauseate many people). Gorgeous rainy, depressing scenes.

The Shining: Shelley Duvall, and Jack Nicholson star in this excellent horror flick. I like the mood it sets: a small family alone, snowbound in a gigantic deserted hotel. Dad starts going crazy; mom and the kid have to hide from him in the snow. Ghosts appear in some of the deserted rooms - and who can forget the bloody elevator scene! I have twin cousins, who I am very close to, and I was always traumatized by the ghost sisters. "Red rum" is a classic quote that all my friends use whenever we get drunk, using evil voices. Yes, we're geeks.

Costume Flicks

I like costume/historical movies - mostly because I like to look at the pretty clothes and neat furniture.

The Bride: Starring Sting and Jennifer Beals, this story is written around Frankenstein's bride. Nice costuming and sets, great acting, even by Jennier, and alluring visuals.

Dangerous Beauty: Venice and courtesans in gorgeous costumes. I couldn't be happier.

Dangerous Liaisons: Glenn Close, John Malkovich, Uma Thurman, Swoosie Kurtz, Keanu Reeves. Two very good friends, who used to be lovers, plot and scheme, through their letters, to destroy the lives of other people. Absolutely awesome and evil. Check out the book too, it's even better. A bunch of rich people visiting each other on their estates, eating and drinking, with nothing better to do than cause mischief with their sexual escapades.

First Knight: Richard Gere, Julia Ormond, Sean Connery. Beautifully done. Sniff!

Sommersby: Jodie Foster and Richard Gere in a post-Civil war film. Makes me bawl every time.

Valmont: The alternate version of Dangerous Liaisons, starring Annette Bening. A more playful, as opposed to evil, version of the tale.

Haunted Summer: The story of the creation of Mary Shelley's Frankenstein. Starring Eric Stoltz as Percy Bysshe Shelley. Basically a bunch of writers/poets get together at Lord Byron's villa, get drunk, argue a lot, have extramarital sex, do drugs (opium) and write some excellent pieces. Gorgeous floaty, ephemeral costumes for "Mary" and Clara Clairborn (Laura Dern).

Impromptu: About the romance of George Sand, the radical female writer, and Chopin the sickly composer. They meet while on vacation at the house of an idiot trendy woman, played well by Emma Thompson.

Ladyhawke: A sweet fantasy starring Matthew Broderick, Michelle Pfeiffer, and Rutger Hauer. Very pleasing on the eyes. Set in medieval times.

Pride and Prejudice: The BBC miniseries with Colin Firth and Jennifer Ehle.

Serpent's Kiss: Ewan McGregor in a wig. This movie is pretty fucked up actually, but check it out.

Somewhere In Time: Okay, I admit it, this is a sappy movie. Time-travel fantasy starring the hunky Christopher Reeves, and the gorgeous Jane Seymour. Plot holes abound, but overall it's a dreamy film.

Films That Make Me Laugh

I guess I have a sick sense of humor, because most horror films make me laugh my butt off.

The Hitcher: C. Thomas Howell, and Rutger Hauer, two gorgeous specimens, star in this film. Every time any violence occurs, I laugh my butt off. Am I deranged? Or is this just a well done film?

Return of the Living Dead: Tee, hee. Eating brains, to kill the pain. I laugh and laugh and laugh. I can always depend on this series to cheer me up.

Crawlspace: Starring Klaus Kinski. This is just too funny.

Art

I enjoy looking at art by Erte, Alphonse Mucha, Gustav Klimt, and H.R. Giger. I love art nouveau, art deco and arts and crafts movement. Egyptian revival makes me drool.

Music

I like a lot of music but what ends up on my stereo the most is: Miranda Sex Garden, Tool, Throwing Muses, The Human League, Diamanda Galas, M-1 Alternative, Nirvana (yes, I admit it), Eiffel 65, The Urchins, Kristina Serra, Blackgirls, The Doors, old Cure, a defunct band from California called Shiva Burlesque, a defunct band from Seattle called Weather Theatre, Current 93, Howard Jones, and Ministry. Not necessarily in that order.

The most enjoyable live concert experiences I've ever had were Crash Worship, Current 93 and Diamanda Galas.
